Time and time again I sat staring at that blasted, blinking cursor, trying to figure out why the scene I just spent so much time on lacked depth, direction, and emotion. It was a struggle that continued on and on, until one day, while watching the movie Gettysburg, inspiration hit me. I went to my computer while the movie played in the background. I rehashed an old scene and whalla! I re-read it and was very well pleased with the outcome.
The next time I sat down to write, I plugged my Gettysburg soundtrack into the CD drive. As the drive spun up and the beautiful, scenic music filled my ears, my fingers went wild on the keyboard.
Since that time, I have rarely sat down to write without some measure of inspirational music playing in my ears. I have created several playlists on both my computer and Imeem designed to illicit specific emotions upon my imagination.
There was once a time that I thought I needed complete silence to concentrate on my writing. Now that I listen to targeted music while I type, I am often left speechless at the end of each scene. The tempo, beat and vibrato of different styles of music translate onto the typed page and much like the auditory symphony, the writing has its own tempo, beat and vibrato.
