Up until recently I have been a regular listener to talk radio and usually visit a few news sites each day. In the weeks since the disastrous and tragic oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico I have grown increasingly apt to simply drive down the road with only the highway noise filling my ears.
One would wonder just what in the world any news outlet would have had to cover in the past few weeks if BP’s oil rig hadn’t begun the process of killing off the Gulf. Newsworthy as it is, there has to be something else bigger to talk about!
There, between long tirades about “big oil” and Obama are little snippets of information about the Israeli Sea blockade, North Korea on the verge of war, and the rest of the world in preparation for a global meltdown. I believe these and many other historic events are worth much more air time than they are being given. While ratings are important, I am increasingly convinced that to “news” organizations today, ratings are much more important than the news.
